Step 1: Contact the Artist
To commission your portrait, email with a reference photo(s) and a description of your portrait.
Please include the following information:
- Portrait Style (Portrait Drawing, Pastel Portrait, Portrait Painting)
- Portrait Size
- Any information you care to share about the subject of the portrait.
Step 2: Planning the Portrait / Down Payment
I will return your email and discuss the portrait with you and answer any questions you might have. If you decide you want to move forward with the commission, a 20% down payment will be required at this point.
Step 3: Approval of the Composition
I will email you an image showing the composition of the portrait. Depending on the nature of the commission, this may simply be your reference photo cropped to the appropriate dimensions, or a rough sketch, or a rough collage if multiple elements need to be included. Once the composition is approved the portrait will begin.
Step 4: Creating the Artwork
Portrait drawings typically take 1 to 3 weeks depending on size and style. Portrait paintings typically take 2 to 6 weeks depending on size and subject. Once the artwork is completed, I will send a photo of the final piece for approval. Once the final portrait is approved the portrait will be sealed with a UV protective fixative. Portrait paintings will get an additional coat of protective varnish so it can be hung without glass like a traditional painting.
Step 5: Final Payment & Delivery
After the final payment is received, the painting will either be shipped or delivered to the client. Free, hand delivery is available within an hour of Portland, Maine. All other portraits can either be picked up by the client, or shipped at an an additional cost.
